The palace in Thessaloniki of the Roman Caesar Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximanus (25O-311 A.D.) is one of most important monuments of late antiquity. The construction of this large building complex degan at the end of the 3rd-beginning of the 4th century A.D., when due to its strategic geographical position the city of Thessaloniki was the official seat of the eastern part of the Roman Empire for two chronological periods (229-3O3 and 3O8-311 A.D.). According to historical sources important emperors of the 4th century A.D. stayed in this palace, Theodosius I being among them.
