The ancient agora, was the administrative centre of Roman Thessaloniki. Constructionbegan at the end of the 2nd century A.D. on the side of an existing agora of the EarlyImperial period. A part of a Hellenistic bathhas been also excavated, interventions were carried out in the mid-third and early fourthcentury. The complex was organized around arectangular paved area. Three sides were lined with two-storey porticoes with a double rowof Corinthian columns giving access to public spaces, in the fifth century it was abandoned,the city’s administrative functions were transferred to Galerius’s palace complex.
